Safe Homes and Livelihood Support: SRAC’s Holistic Approach to Flood Recovery

In Sylhet, where annual flooding displaces thousands of families, SRAC has adopted a comprehensive approach to providing safe, flood-resilient homes and restoring livelihoods. The House Building for the Poor (DRR Project), implemented in partnership with Muslim Charity UK, focuses on constructing elevated, durable homes that can withstand extreme weather conditions. These eco-friendly structures provide long-term stability for families who have lost everything to floods.

However, SRAC recognizes that shelter alone is not enough to rebuild lives. To address the economic challenges faced by flood-affected families, the organization integrates livelihood restoration into its rehabilitation efforts. Through income-generating activities (IGA programs), SRAC provides training, microloans, and seed capital to help individuals start small businesses. Women-led initiatives, such as poultry farming, handicrafts, and tailoring, are particularly emphasized, fostering economic resilience and gender equality.

Additionally, SRAC promotes climate-adaptive agricultural practices to support flood-affected farmers. Techniques such as floating gardens, drought-resistant crops, and sustainable irrigation ensure that farmers can continue their livelihoods despite the challenges posed by climate change.

By combining safe housing with economic empowerment, SRAC ensures that displaced families not only recover from disasters but also thrive in the face of adversity. The organization’s commitment to sustainable solutions reflects its vision of a future where no family in Sylhet is left without a secure home or a stable income.
